One night, sitting in the kitchen with my two sisters – I must have been about eight or nine years old and my sisters both older than I – we began discussing who we were in former lives. One said she must have been Cleopatra, or that she definitely lived in that era. The other had participated in the Russian revolution. And when they looked at me, I told them that I hadn’t the faintest idea, I’d never heard of a former life.
These artworks explore patterns of human curiosity, from the silliness of childhood fantasy to the incredulousness of modern science. I Have So Many Questions contemplates the cutting edge science of gene manipulation and cloning: pieces taken from here and there to make up a new whole. Referring to my childhood memory, again I ask where did we come from and where are we going, because I haven’t the faintest idea. Likewise, Nature by Humans is an observation of what has become of nature under the influence of humanity: caged, farmed and altered.
